In December 1996, five organizations representing the chemical industry published a report entitled Technology Vision 2020: The U.S Chemical Industry, which articulated the industry's vision of its future. These five organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Energy in February 1997. This Memorandum of Understanding, or compact, lays the foundation for collaborative efforts between the industry and the federal government. Signed by both key industry spokesmen and Department of Energy officials, it is a formal commitment to align DOE's limited resources to meet the challenges identified in the vision.
These five organizations are:
- American Chemistry Council (ACC)
- American Chemical Society (ACS)
- American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE)
- Council for Chemical Research (CCR)
- Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association (SOCMA)
In addition several other organizations have expressed interest in setting up alliances to assist the chemical industry in implementing its vision. These organizations are:
- Chemical Industry Vision2020 Technology Partnership
- Center for Waste Reduction Technologies (CWRT)
- Materials Technology Institute
- DOE Laboratory Coordinating Council
- Green Chemistry Institute
- National Center for Manufacturing Sciences
