Combined heat and power (CHP) is a key component of distributed energy within the Industrial Technologies Program (ITP). CHP provides a cost-effective, near-term opportunity to improve our nation's energy, environmental, and economic future.

Accelerated CHP has proven its effectiveness and holds promise for the future—as an:

  • Environmental Solution: Significantly reducing CO2 emissions through greater energy efficiency

  • Competitive Business Solution: Increasing efficiency, reducing business costs, and creating green-collar jobs

  • Local Energy Solution: Deployable throughout the U.S.

  • Infrastructure Modernization Solution: Relieving grid congestion and improving energy security.

ITP supports the installation of a CHP system at a Frito-Lay food processing facility in Killingly, Connecticut. The CHP system will generate almost 100% of the facility's electrical requirements, use waste heat to produce steam for manufacturing, reduce carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions, and ease transmission congestion.
