The Industrial Technologies Program forms public-private partnerships to focus the combined strengths of business and government on solutions to complex problems. First, industry defines a vision and long-term goals. Next, industry develops a technology roadmap with specific research and development (R&D) pathways. ITP then overlays the priorities of the roadmap with other analytical studies to identify the best opportunities for energy savings. Finally, ITP and industry share the costs of R&D projects that can significantly improve energy efficiency. The development of the forest products partnership is described below.

In November 1994, the forest products industry published Agenda 2020: A Technology Vision and Research Agenda for America's Forest, Wood and Paper Industry (PDF 94 KB), which articulated the industry's vision. In 1995, DOE issued its first solicitation for cost shared R&D in collaboration with the American Forest and Paper Association's (AF&PA) Agenda 2020 working groups. Since this time, AF&PA's Agenda 2020 effort has grown in scope and size to include partnerships with other Federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The original technology roadmap (PDF 203 KB) published by the industry in 1999 has been updated by two industry-coordinated Technology Summits held in May 2001 and May 2004. Download Adobe Reader
