The Industrial Technologies Program forms public-private partnerships to focus the combined strengths of business and government on solutions to complex problems. First, industry defines a vision and long-term goals. Next, industry develops a technology roadmap with specific research and development (R&D) pathways. ITP then overlays the priorities of the roadmap with other analytical studies to identify the best opportunities for energy savings. Finally, ITP and industry share the costs of R&D projects that can significantly improve energy efficiency. The development of the glass partnership is described below.
In January 1996, the glass industry published Glass: A Clear Vision for a Bright Future (PDF 504 KB), which articulated the industry's vision. In 1998, the glass industry created the Glass Manufacturing Industry Council (GMIC) under the auspices of the American Ceramic Society to represent all sectors of the industry. The GMIC now works closely with the Department of Energy to coordinate collaborative efforts. In 2002 the GMIC published the Glass Industry Technology Roadmap, and in 2003 the GMIC became an EERE Allied Partner.
