Industry Partnerships

The U.S. Department of Energy and the mining industry are participating in several collaborative partnerships to seek energy-efficient opportunities. These partnerships, including the Mining Industry of the Future, are helping to advance technology research development and deployment and identify energy-saving opportunities in mining.

Industries of the Future Partnership

The Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) Industries of the Future partnership is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of Energy and industry. ITP provides cost-shared funding to selected R&D projects that address industry-defined priorities as well as national goals for energy and the environment.

Mining Industry of the Future Partner

The National Mining Association (NMA) is the voice of the American mining industry in Washington, D.C. NMA is the only national trade organization that represents the interests of mining before Congress, the Administration, federal agencies, the judiciary and the media.

Their membership includes more than 325 corporations involved in all aspects of the mining industry including coal, metal and industrial mineral producers, mineral processors, equipment manufacturers, state associations, bulk transporters, engineering firms, consultants, financial institutions and other companies that supply goods and services to the mining industry. NMA provides a forum for all the diverse segments of the mining industry to come together and advocate public policies designed to protect and expand opportunities for domestic mining.

Vision

The Mining Industry of the Future was started in June 1998 when the Chairman of the National Mining Association and the Secretary of Energy entered into a Compact to pursue a collaborative technology research partnership. After the Compact signing, the mining industry developed its vision document, The Future Begins with Mining, A Vision of the Mining Industry of the Future, in September 1998. This vision document lists long-term goals for the mining industry. Stemming from this vision document, targeted technology roadmaps were developed that describe pathways of research to achieve the vision goals.

Roadmaps

As part of the mining vision process, industry develops technology roadmaps to identify critical pathways for the R&D needed to reach their goals. These roadmaps aid both industry and government in making decisions to support R&D critical to the industry's vision of the future.
