Welcome to the Quick Plant Energy Profiler (Quick PEP) online tutorial. The following sections and pages will explain what the Quick PEP is and how to use it.

Overview

small screenshot of Quick PEP toolThe Quick Plant Energy Profiler is an online software tool developed by the U.S. Department of Energy to help U.S. industrial plants quickly understand how plant energy is being purchased and consumed and also helps identify potential cost and energy savings opportunities. Quick PEP is designed to be completed in about an hour by plant personnel with access to the necessary plant data. It must be understood that the Quick PEP tool is meant to be a broad overview of the energy profile for a plant and that the main purpose of the Quick PEP tool is to point the user to further resources and tools. Quick PEP is like a road map that helps the user understand his/her current energy situation and provides directions for exploring more targeted ways of saving energy and money.

Listed below are the major sections of the Quick PEP tool with a short description. Click on the name of a section to learn more about how to use that section of Quick PEP.

1. Screen Layout

Get an overview of how the Quick PEP screens are layed out and how to navigate through the application.

2. Quick PEP Cases

When using Quick PEP you put all of your information for a plant in to a Quick PEP case. Learn how to start a new case as well as save case files to your computer and open previously saved cases.

3. Registering

Registration is not required to use Quick PEP. However, registration allows you to save your case files to the server and access them from any computer. Learn about how to create a username and password and register on the Quick PEP site.

4. Case Information

This screen is used for entering the basic information about your Quick PEP case.

5. Supplied Energy

The first major step in the Quick PEP process is to provide information about the energy that you purchase or generate on site. On these screens you will provide information about the quantity and cost of electricity, steam, and fuel used at your plant. This is the "supply" side of the Quick PEP equation.

6. Production Information

If you provide some information about the average production at your plant, then Quick PEP can provide you with estimates on the amount and cost of energy purchased and used at your plant on a unit of production basis. This step is completely optional.

7. Energy Use Systems

The next key step in the Quick PEP process is to select the major energy use systems that are in your plant. Quick PEP provides a list of major systems with definitions.

8. Energy Use Distribution

Once you have provided the supplied energy information and selected your energy use systems, the next step is to provide some energy usage information. Quick PEP does this by having you provide energy use percentages. Quick PEP also provides default industry information and worksheets to help you complete this step.

9. Energy Savings Opportunities

The final step before viewing your results is to provide some information about the relative energy efficiency of the major systems at your plant. Quick PEP allows you to characterize the efficiency yourself or fill out an optional score card for selected systems to guage the efficiency of the system.

10. Results

The final step in the process is to view your customized results. Quick PEP provides you with tables and charts to show the amount of energy purchased, generated, and consumed. It also provides a table of potential energy savings for each major system in your plant based on the data collected. Finally, Quick PEP gives you a customized set of next steps that can help you focus on the systems in your plant that have the largest potential to save you energy and money.
