Tutorial: Supplied Energy

Overview>

In steps two, three, and four of the Quick PEP you enter all of the supplied energy for your plant. This includes energy that you purchase and also energy that you generate on site for consumption at your plant. For these screens you will need to know the average amount of energy purchased and the average cost for each of the three types of energy (electricity, fuel and steam).

Supplied Electricity (Step 2 of 9)

In this step you enter all of the different supplied electricity streams for your plant. A stream can be thought of as a unique supply of electricity. A plant may have more than one electricity stream. For example, a plant may purchase electricity from two different sources and it also may generate electricity on site using a heat recovery steam generator. This would be three unique streams of electricity. For each stream or electricity account you will enter the following information:

  • Account Name: the name that you give this account. It should be something familiar so that you can remember which account is which.
  • Period: the period of time that you are entering information for. You can enter a monthly average, a quarterly average or an annual average.
  • Average Quantity: the average quantity of electricity purchased during the selected period. This will include the number and the units.
  • Average Cost: the average cost of electricity purchased during the selected period. For electricity that is generated on site (see next) the Average Cost should be set to zero (0).
  • Generated On site: if this electricity stream is generated on site through combined heat and power (or some other process), then you should check the Generated On Site checkbox. If you check the Generated On Site checkbox, you should enter a value of $0 (zero) for the Average Cost. This guards against double counting of energy costs.

After you have entered the required information click on the Add button to add the electricity stream to your list. You must click on the Add button to add this stream to your list of streams. Once a stream has been entered you may click on the Edit or Delete buttons to modify or remove an electricity stream.

If you do not know the annual average amount of electricity that you purchase or generate you may use the Worksheet button to enter detailed billing information and let Quick PEP calculate the monthly averages. Just click on the Worksheet button to create or edit an electricity account.

On the electricity worksheet you first enter the name for the account and the units that will be used for each month in the worksheet. You also check whether this account is generated on site or not. Then you simply enter as much electricity bill information as you have. If you only have 5 months worth of bills then for each bill enter the quantity of electricity purchased (or generated) and the total cost of the electricity. This total cost should include any other charges on the bill. Quick PEP will automatically determine the annual average based on the data that you enter. It is important to understand that the worksheets assume that the data that is entered is monthly data. If you enter only 3 months worth of data, Quick PEP will total all of the information and multiply by 4 to calculate the annual averages. If you have an electricity account that is billed on some other schedule (every 6 weeks, every other month, etc.) you should not use the worksheet. You should calculate the averages on your own and enter them on the main electricity accounts page.

When you have finished entering your electricity accounts click on the Next button at the bottom of the list.

Supplied Fuel (Step 3 of 9)

The next step in the Quick PEP process is to enter all of your supplied fuel streams. This includes all fuel that you purchase and any fuel that you generate on site. The supplied fuel screen works the same way that the supplied electricity screen works. For each unique fuel stream you will enter the following information:

  • Stream Name: the name that you give this fuel stream. It should be something familiar so that you can remember which stream is which.
  • Period: the period of time that you are entering information for. You can enter a monthly average, a quarterly average or an annual average.
  • Fuel Type: the type of fuel for this stream. You will select one of the available fuel types. In the event that you purchase a fuel that is not on the list you should select Other from the drop down list and also enter a custom heating value.
  • Average Quantity: the average quantity of fuel purchased during the selected period. This will include the number and the units.
  • Heating Value: the heating value is used to calculate the energy for a given amount of fuel. Quick PEP provides you with a default heating value for each fuel in the list of fuel types. You may use this heating value or you may choose to use your own heating value if you know what it is. Use the radio button to decide if you wish to use the default heating value or the custom heating value.
  • Average Cost: the average cost of fuel purchased during the selected period. For fuel that is generated on site (see next) the Average Cost should be set to zero (0).
  • Generated On site: if this fuel stream is generated on site, then you should check the Generated On Site checkbox. If you check the Generated On Site checkbox, you should enter a value of $0 (zero) for the Average Cost. This guards against double counting of energy costs.

The supplied fuel section has a worksheet that you can use to calculate all of your supplied fuel information. The fuel worksheet is similar to the electricity worksheet as described above.

Supplied Steam (Step 4 of 9)

The next step in the Quick PEP process is to enter all your supplied steam streams. This includes only steam that you purchase. The supplied steam screen works the same way that the fuel and electricity screens work. For each unique steam stream you will enter the following information:

  • Stream Name: the name that you give this steam stream. It should be something familiar so that you can remember which stream is which.
  • Period: the period of time that you are entering information for. You can enter a monthly average, a quarterly average or an annual average.
  • Average Quantity: the average quantity of steam purchased or generated during the selected period. This will include the number and the units.
  • Average Temperature: the average temperature of the steam purchased or generated. The temperature and pressure together will be used to calculate the enthalpy, or energy value, of the steam.
  • Average Pressure: the average pressure of the steam purchased or generated.
  • Average Cost: the average cost of the steam purchased or generated during the selected period. For steam that is generated on site (see next) the Average Cost should be set to zero (0).
