Tutorial: Energy Use Distribution - Step 7 of 9

Overview

The energy use distribution screens provide energy usage information for Quick PEP. The purpose of these two screens is for you to provide Quick PEP with some idea of how much energy each of the major systems in your plant use on an annual basis. The way that you do this is by supplying the percentage of total electricity or total fuel/steam that each system uses. Quick PEP provides you with default percentages for your industry. If you are not sure how much energy each of your systems uses you can skip this step and just use the default percentages for your industry.

If you would like to modify the default percentages you are free to enter any percentage you like for each system. The total of all systems must equal 100%. Quick PEP will always make sure that the grand total is 100% by assigning the remainder to the "Other" category. If all of the percentages that you have entered only total to 96% then Quick PEP will put the remaining 4% in the Other category.

After you have modified the percentages you may click on the Update Table button to refresh the screen and see the new values. At any time you may also click on the Reset to Defaults button to set all of the percentages back to the defaults for your selected industry.

Worksheets

Quick PEP also provides you with worksheets if you are not sure what the percentages are for each of your systems and you would not like to use the industry defaults. The electricity worksheet is very straightfoward. The first step is to select the electricity units from the drop down list at the top of the screen. These units will be used for the entire worksheet. Now simply enter the annual amount of electricity that is used by each system. For example, if you selected kWh from the drop down list then you would enter the number of kWh that each system consumes annually in the box next to each system. Quick PEP will keep a running total and also make sure that the total balances with the amount of electricity that you said that you purchased each year. If the total of all of the amounts that you entered is less than the amount that you said that you purchased then Quick PEP will automatically put the remainder in the "Other" category. Once you have finished entering all of the usage information just click the Save and Return button. This will save your worksheet information and Quick PEP will use this data to calculate the percentages for the electricity distribution.

Fuel/Steam Worksheet

The fuel/steam worksheet is a two step, two screen process. The first screen is fuel consumption. This step is very similar to the electricity worksheet as described above. You simply enter the annual fuel consumption for each system in MMBtu. This is total fuel consumption for all fuels for each system. Again, Quick PEP will balance the fuel consumption with the purchased fuel by assigning any remainder to the "Other" category.

The second screen is the steam worksheet. In the first section of the steam worksheet you enter the units that you measure steam consumption with, the average temperature, and the average pressure of your steam.

The next section of the steam worksheet records the actual steam consumption for each system. You will enter the amount of steam that is used by each major system annually. Remember that you are using the units that you provided in the first part of the steam worksheet. Again, Quick PEP will balance the steam consumption with the purchased or generated steam by assigning any remainder to the "Other" category.

When you have completed the fuel and steam worksheets click on the Finish button. Quick PEP will use the data that you provided to calculate the percentages for the main annual fuel/steam distribution screen.
