Participate
If you are selected to receive a Save Energy Now energy assessment, you will need to actively participate in the assessment. This page describes how to get the most out of your assessment. We suggest that you and your team read this page before your assessment, so that you understand the level of participation required.
If selected for an energy assessment, you will be contacted to get started. Large plant assessments are conducted by Energy Experts, selected for their qualifications and experience working with DOE software tools to conduct energy assessments.
Small to medium-sized assessment are conducted by trained faculty and students at university-based Industrial Assessment Centers. Visit Industrial Assessment Centers to learn more about participating in this type of assessment.
Focus on Training for Large Plant Assessments
The strong focus on training before and during your energy assessment is distinct from most assessments. Before your assessment, your staff will be strongly encouraged to participate in a Webcast or 1-day software tool training, to prepare you to use the DOE software assessment tool appropriate for the energy system that is the focus of the assessment. See Apply for more about selecting an energy-intensive system for your assessment.
During the assessment, your plant personnel will be trained to identify energy savings opportunities using DOE software tools. This training has been successful in promoting continuous attention to energy management in plants and to the numerous DOE resources available to support energy management.
The assessment team will be composed of your Energy Expert and plant personnel. By using a team approach, your plant can directly apply the knowledge gained in the training. Assessment teams have found additional energy savings in most plants, even in plants with in-house expertise.
Schedule for Large Plant Onsite Assessments
The following is a general overview of the 3-day onsite assessment for large plants.
Day One
On Day One, the Energy Expert will conduct a safety briefing for your plant team and tour the plant. The Energy Expert will provide an overview to your team of the DOE software tool that will be used to identify savings opportunities. Together with the Energy Expert, your team will agree on potential energy efficiency opportunities to investigate, and you will begin data collection for potential opportunities.
Day Two
On Day Two, you will continue with data collection and apply the DOE software assessment tool to quantify potential opportunities. Your plant lead person and the Energy Expert will discuss and agree on the opportunities identified.
Day Three
On Day Three, you will have time to wrap up the software tool analysis and ask questions. The plant lead person and the Energy Expert will discuss how to gain management support to implement opportunities identified in the assessment. A close-out meeting will be held in the afternoon to review results.
After the assessment is completed, your Energy Expert will provide you with a detailed report identifying implementation opportunities. View assessment reports from other participating plants.
