Industrial Technologies Program – Steel Industry of the Future

R&D Portfolio

Direct Flame Impingement

The Direct Flame Impingement (DFI) technology enables a high-efficiency, rapid-heating, low-NOx alternative to conventional steel shape heating. See more Active R&D.

The Steel Industry of the Future partnership fosters revolutionary ironmaking and steelmaking projects as well as incremental improvements to existing processes. This approach addresses long-term goals without neglecting short-term needs. The program also strives to expand the industry's fundamental base of knowledge to optimize key processes and resource efficiency. The three major R&D focus areas are:

  • Cokeless Ironmaking
  • Next Generation Steelmaking
  • Advanced Process Development

All projects in the Steel R&D Portfolio are selected through an open, competitive solicitation process that encourages diverse partnerships.
