Commercialization

Commercialization includes the full spectrum of activities required to move a new technology, product, or process from its conceptual stage to the marketplace. Commercialization can be said to have occurred when a new product or process is actually being sold into the market. This means someone needs to be producing and selling it.

There are two primary commercialization options — (1) licensing, in which you grant one or more entities certain rights to the technology, usually for a given period of time, and (2) venturing, in which you and perhaps others attempt to build a business around the technology. This section is intended to help you start thinking about what commercialization path might be best for your technology and situation.
