It's Usually Cold Outside Where I Live
If you live in a place where it's usually cold outside, your parents should open the drapes on the south side of the house during the day to let the sunlight in. You can help keep your house warm by opening the drapes in the morning and closing them at night.
If your house is old and the windows are old, too, then they probably feel cold when you touch them on a cold day. You might feel a draft if you sit by the window on a cold night. But now there are windows with special coatings that can let in the sunlight without letting in the cold. They're called low-e windows, and they help your house stay really warm when it's cold outside.
Are your parents planning to replace windows or build a new addition to your home? They can save money and be good to the earth by buying energy-saving windows. Tell them to look for the ENERGY STAR® when they order new windows. The ENERGY STAR tells them that they are saving energy.
