November 21, 2012

Dr. Lynn Daniels, a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow in the Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO), participated in an open panel discussion on advanced manufacturing solutions at the TransTech Energy Business Development Conference on November 15 in Morgantown, West Virginia. The event, organized to promote funding opportunities for innovative companies that reduce carbon emissions, create opportunities for advanced manufacturing, and improve energy efficiency, was attended by 127 representatives from industry, government, and academia and showcased new technologies from 15 companies from the surrounding region. Dr. Daniel's presentation covered AMO funding priorities and the Accelerator Challenge – a multi-agency sponsored competition established to enhance existing regional networks of firms and institutions that accelerate technology-related innovation, business formation, and job creation.

The Jobs & Innovation Accelerator provides targeted funding to high-potential industry clusters to accelerate economic growth, job creation, and commercialization of research breakthroughs. The Accelerator was first announced by the Obama administration on May 29, 2012, and the first round of awards was announced on October 9, 2012. In collaboration with AMO, other Accelerator partners include the Economic Development Administration and the National Institute of Standards and Technology at the Department of Commerce, the Employment and Training Administration at the Department of Labor, the Small Business Administration, and the National Science Foundation.
