About Energy Intensive Processes

Energy Intensive Processes (EIP) works with industrial partners to transform the way that they use energy to improve national energy security, the climate and environment, and economic competitiveness. To achieve these ends, EIP is refining its R&D strategy to focus on specific technology platforms that are expected to generate large energy-saving benefits across a variety of industries.

The goals of EIP R&D include:

  • Reducing industrial energy use by 25% while also reducing subsequent carbon emissions.

  • Decreasing energy consumption in reactions and separations.

  • Developing new materials, material processing, and process monitoring technologies that increase energy efficiency during high-temperature processing.

  • Increasing waste heat recovery to reduce the fuel demands of steam boilers and furnaces.

  • Advancing materials and technologies to improve yields per unit energy cost for multiple elements of the manufacturing chain.
