Multimaterial Joining Workshop
July 23, 2012
Chicago, IL – Workshop
Title: Multimaterial Joining Workshop
Date: Monday July 23, 2012
Location: Hilton Rosemont, 5550 River Road, Chicago, IL
Time: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM CDT
The Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) at The Department of Energy will host a Multimaterial Joining Workshop in Chicago on Monday July 23, 2012. Multimaterial joining techniques are increasingly important industrial processes with wide applications in consumer goods, as well as automotive, aerospace, rail, and medical device manufacturing sectors. Joining new materials, such as composites and lightweight metals, presents a number of technical challenges including thermal expansion mismatch, surface preparation, limited structural temperature and load range, and the directional properties of composite materials.
Addressing the challenges connected with multimaterial joining technologies are critical to the successful widespread use of new composite materials and light-weighting applications. For example, currently, process modeling and simulation work are needed in joining techniques and in improving the ability to predict the mechanical properties of complex joined structures. In addition, a more fundamental understanding of deformation, damage, fracture, and other failure mechanisms are needed. Developing better automation of high quality joining procedures also holds considerable potential to reduce manufacturing costs. And once materials have been joined, new instruments and sensors must be developed to assess and characterize the structural integrity of the joined region.
This AMO workshop will gather stakeholder input from industry and academia on the current state of the art and the development opportunities and manufacturing challenges. AMO is particularly interested in improving the quality, reliability and reducing the cost of multimaterial joints and welds in light-weighting applications, and anticipated trends for composite material and multimaterial joining applications. The workshop will include presentations by government personnel, industry and academic experts, as well as facilitated breakout sessions to gather input from participants.
