Today, the Department of Energy's Office of Industrial Technologies (OIT) announced the availability of a new report titled Energy and Environmental Profile of the U.S. Metalcasting Industry. The report presents benchmark energy use and environmental data for the metalcasting industry as a whole and at the process level for each of the industry's major unit operations.

The energy and environmental profile was developed in support of OIT's Industries of the Future strategy for promoting energy efficiency. By presenting current data for each major process in the metalcasting industry, the report will serve as a valuable reference in helping to inform collaborative industry-DOE technology planning. Accompanying process descriptions provide an informative overview of this vital industry. Processes covered include mold making, coremaking, lost foam casting, and die casting, among others.

In addition to supplying the most current estimates of energy use for each major industry process, the report summarizes inputs/outputs for these processes. It also characterizes the air emissions, effluents and hazardous wastes generated by each process.

The report serves as an excellent reference source, since it draws from many different types of informational materials.
