ITP Report Features Key Achievements of FY06
October 16, 2006
ITP is pleased to highlight successes from a very productive Fiscal Year 2006 (FY06) in its new report, Industrial Technologies Program: Improving the Energy Performance of U.S. Industry (PDF 2.0 MB). Through its diverse R&D portfolio and technical assistance to the nation’s manufacturing facilities, ITP has helped save nearly 5 quads of energy, or $23 billion, since its inception. This report reviews accomplishments, challenges and opportunities, strategies for innovation, and technology highlights for the past year.
Several new technical innovations in equipment and processes were developed this year that offer practical energy solutions for industry. In addition, eight ITP-sponsored technologies won prestigious R&D 100 awards, which honor the 100 most scientifically significant projects of the year. A key technology accomplishment was the demonstration of the Isothermal Melting Process (PDF 46.2 KB) which melts aluminum with 50% less energy and reduces emissions by 80%. A major success for this year is ITP’s ambitious Save Energy Now initiative, which provided many opportunities to address the huge energy challenges in U.S. industrial plants. Through this campaign, ITP offered 200 free Energy Savings Assessments to the nation’s largest energy-consuming plants, and also provided Web casts, software tools, training, publications and other technical resources to help plants save energy and money.
Outreach activities of FY06 included plant assessments through ITP-sponsored Industrial Assessment Centers, conducting more than 100 BestPractices training sessions, distributing nearly 10,000 Save Energy Now CDs, and developing the Quick Plant Energy Profiler (Quick PEP) software tool.
