The Department of Energy issued a request for proposals on February 2, for technology research and development projects that address priority needs of the renewable bioproducts industry. The renewable bioproducts solicitation calls for technologies and processes that will help the industry achieve 10 percent of basic chemical building blocks from alternative feedstocks by 2020. The industry goal is to increase the use of crops, trees and agricultural wastes to manufacture industrial chemicals and a huge range of everyday consumer goods such as plastics, paints, detergents and lubricants. The renewable bioproducts industry consists of members of the U.S. agricultural, forestry and chemical communities. The solicitation is available at the website 'current solicitations' or by calling Carla Harper at 630/252-2942. Pre-applications are due by March 12, 1999, and five-page applications by April 23, 1999. A solicitation overview conference will be held on Thursday, February 25 in Chicago, Ill, at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare.
