Corporate Peer Review Enhances Program Focus

    March 25, 2004

As part of its continuing improvement efforts, the Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) held a Corporate Peer Review March 9th and 10th. For two days in Arlington, VA, the mission, goals, and activities of ITP and all of its components (including Chemicals, Forest Products, Steel, Aluminum, Metal Casting, Mining, Materials, Glass, Technology Delivery, Tool Development, Combustion, Sensors & Automation, and Supporting Industries) were presented to more than 200 representatives from industry and other organizations. During the 25 individual sessions that composed the Peer Review, the attendees reviewed prospective plans for both industry-specific and crosscutting R&D. In facilitated discussions following the ITP presentations, participants raised issues that could affect ITP and its plans for the future. ITP will use the input and feedback to help improve multi-year plans, provide greater understanding of the technical barriers faced by industry, and sharpen the focus as ITP pursues its mission.

The Corporate Peer Review also provided an opportunity for industry partners to network with peers, other key industry leaders and decision-makers, top academics, and government officials. In addition, poster displays showcased new industrial energy efficiency practices and technologies.

Energy continues to be an issue of both national and international significance. ITP views the participation of partners in multi-year planning as critical to the success of its research portfolios. The R&D implemented through ITP is a key element of a balanced national energy policy that fosters increased public-private partnerships between government and industry. This first Corporate Peer Review gave its participants a greater understanding of ITP, its mission and strategies, and the direction of industrial energy efficiency within the U.S. Department of Energy.
