    2003 IAC Student Meeting

    Congressman Zack Wamp speaks with the IAC's students about the history of the US Congress.The IAC Student's Meeting was held in Washington DC on February 13th and 14th, 2003. Thirty-six IAC students from centers across the U.S. attended the two-day meeting. On day one, the students were treated to a visit to congress, hosted by Tennessee Congressman Zack Wamp.

    On the second day, students got down to business through a series of technical presentations and discussions with IAC Program management. Buddy Garland, Program Manager for the Industrial Technologies Program (under which the IAC is located) spoke with the students about the value and impact of the IAC program and how highly DOE values the work of the students. Students also learned about the structure of the DOE and how the IAC program is funded by congress.

    Technical presentations on the following topics were provided by students and other speakers.

    • Licensure Credit - Kurt Stafford, Michaela Martin, ORNL
    • BEP Assessment - Sharath Chandra, Andres Gutierrez, UT-Arlington
    • Energy Calculations - Nasr Alkadi, W. VA
    • Chiller Tool - Michael Socks, UMASS
    • CHP Tool - Ben Erpelding, SDSU Alumni
    • Steam Master Tool - Tyler Downey, Oregon State
    • Energy Projects at the US Mint - Marcos Irizarry, US Mint

    The two-day meeting also provided an opportunity for students to network with each other, with speakers and IAC alumni. Alumni participants were: Gary Epstein of Energy and Resource Solutions (UMASS), Jason Vass of Excelon Energy Services (Tennessee), and Ben Erpelding of the San Diego Regional Energy Office, (San Diego State).
