ITP Announces Six Plant-wide Assessment Awards

    December 7, 2004

The Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) has selected six projects from the Plant-wide Assessment (PWA) Financial Opportunity Announcement FY04, which will investigate plant energy efficiency, and identify energy-savings opportunities and projects.

Plant-wide assessments (PWA) help determine which plant systems offer the greatest energy savings potential, and then identify specific actions to achieve those savings. ITP plans to contribute approximately $530,000 in cost-shared funding towards the projects.

Identification and implementation of opportunities in process and utility systems that improve energy efficiency and reduce waste in energy-intensive industries is a key goal of ITP. Through open, competitive solicitations such as the one for these most recent awards, DOE offers opportunities for industries to participate in cost-shared efforts to identify significant energy reductions.  Following is information on the selected PWA projects:

    Shaw Industries Group, Inc.
    DOE Funding Level:  $75,000
"Plant Wide Assessment for Synthetic Fiber Extrusion"—Aiken, SC
Shaw Industries will follow a four-step process to evaluate energy savings opportunities at its fiber extrusion plant, including developing an energy profile, constructing a process map and pinch analysis, conducting gap analysis, and analyzing energy savings opportunities.

    California Portland Cement Company
    DOE Funding Level: $59,319
"Plant-Wide Energy Efficiency Assessment at the Arizona Portland Cement Plant"—Rillito, AZ
This PWA will analyze the current energy usage and opportunities of three plant areas—cement manufacturing process optimization and operational efficiencies; electrical power distribution and lighting opportunities; and compressor air operation—to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency, and develop an implementation plan.

    Johns Manville
    DOE Funding Level: $100,000
"Plant Wide Assessment for Johns Manville Fiberglass Plant"—Waterville, OH
John Mansville will assess and evaluate energy consumption and production practices in major energy-intensive systems of the Waterville fiberglass plant to determine specific actions for greatest potential savings. Another important objective is to identify replicable savings opportunities for other Johns Manville plants and throughout the glass industry.

    Twin City Die Castings Company
    DOE Funding Level: $100,000
"Energy and Technology Assessment of Zinc and Magnesium Die Casting Plants"—Minneapolis, MN
Twin City Die Casting Company and North American Die Casting Association (NADCA) will perform 10 energy and technology assessments of zinc and magnesium die casting plants within eight companies, using the die casting assessment tool developed by NADCA.  The tool will reveal where opportunities exist for applying new technologies that can enhance energy efficiency as well as identifying areas for best practices application to existing processes. PWA results will be replicated through NADCA channels.

    PPG Industries
    DOE Funding Level: $100,000
"U.S. DOE Industrial Technologies Program—Technology Delivery Plant-Wide Assessment at PPG Industries, Natrium, WV"
Building on the results of a preliminary assessment by PPG and West Virginia University Industrial Assessment Center, this project team will use a systems approach to evaluate the entire Natrium Plant for energy efficiency opportunities, including process and utility areas. The team will also use "pinch" techniques to determine the minimum practical energy requirement of various process units, and to evaluate opportunities for optimization of heat exchange networks and process integration.

    Pilgrim's Pride Corporation
    DOE Funding Level: $95,405
"Mt. Pleasant Facility Plant Wide Assessment"—Mt. Pleasant, TX
A systematic evaluation of energy use at the chicken processing food plant will be used to develop a comprehensive strategy to reduce energy use and environmental emissions, and increase profitability and competitiveness. Processes with the highest annual savings potential will be targeted for further evaluation, and might include steam production, compressed air production, and refrigeration.

This is the seventh round of PWA awards since 1998. To date, ITP has awarded cost-shared funding to 49 projects, a total of approximately $4 million. The annual dollar savings identified in the 35 projects completed totals $186 million per year, with projected electricity savings of 389 million kWh/yr, and 17 trillion Btu/yr in fossil fuels. Thus far, implemented annual savings at 26 plants is currently about $74 million, with 48 million kWh/yr and 1 trillion Btu/yr in energy savings realized.
