Ten Timely Tips for Reducing Process Heating Energy and Maintenance Costs

Do you need to cut energy and maintenance costs associated with your industrial plant's furnaces, ovens, and other process heating equipment? If so, a new brochure from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) can help.

This brochure lists 10 tried-and-true—and timely—ways to increase your equipment's energy efficiency and reduce its operating and maintenance costs while curbing the environmental emissions associated with energy use. These tips are especially helpful for those wanting to lower their natural gas usage.

For example, one good way to operate your process heating equipment more efficiently is to recover the heat in furnace exhaust or flue gases and use it to heat the air, water, or oil in heating, ventilation, and cooling or process equipment. You might also want to use heat recovery methods to preheat the material headed for a furnace or oven.

Reductions in energy use resulting from following these tips can range from 2% to as much as 25% annually. And the changes in your energy bills will reflect that reduction.
