New Report Shows DOE Making an Impact on Industrial Energy Efficiency

In the last 28 years, DOE’s Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) has helped U.S. industry save about 5.13 quadrillion Btu, worth about $29.3 billion, in part by supporting more than 600 research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) projects that have produced more than 190 technologies. Read the new report, Impacts: Industrial Technologies Program, Summary of Program Results for CY 2005 (PDF 3.5 MB) for details on 101 of these successfully commercialized technologies, which, in 2005 alone, saved 99 trillion Btu in energy.
In addition, the report summarizes other ways U.S. industrial manufacturers are making strides by working in partnership with ITP. These include bottom-line benefits such as increased productivity and improved product quality, as well as environmental benefits, such as reduced waste, carbon dioxide, and air pollutants.
The Impacts report also gives an overview of ITP technical assistance programs: BestPractices, which offers software tools, technical resources, and expert advice to help industrial plants better manage energy use; and university-based Industrial Assessment Centers that help eligible manufacturers identify potential energy and cost savings through free, on-site assessments. These programs, combined with RD&D efforts, helped industry save more than 400 trillion Btu of energy, which adds up to $4.44 billion in cost savings in 2005.
