DOE Recognizes 128 Companies with 2008 Save Energy Now Awards

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is recognizing 128 U.S. manufacturers with 2008 Save Energy Now Awards. DOE presents annual awards to individual plants and companies for actively pursuing energy savings opportunities identified through a Save Energy Now energy assessment. By implementing their assessment recommendations over the last year, these manufacturers have achieved more than $37 million in cost savings and 2.9 trillion Btu in energy savings.

Save Energy Now is a national initiative of DOE’s Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) to drive a 25% reduction in industrial energy intensity over 10 years. Save Energy Now assessments are conducted at large industrial plants by a DOE Energy Expert, while small- to mid-sized plant assessments are offered through Industrial Assessment Centers. About 20% of the plants assessed in 2007 are receiving a Save Energy Now award. These companies have reported their energy assessment results and met the following criteria:

Energy Saver—More than 75,000 MMBtu total energy or more than 7.5% total energy savings
Energy Champion—More than 250,000 MMBtu total energy savings or more than 15% total energy savings.

DOE is honoring 83 plants with the Energy Saver award and 45 plants with the Energy Champion Plant award. A 2008 Save Energy Now Awards kick-off event took place on October 2, 2008, during the 31st World Energy Engineering Congress conference in Washington, DC. DOE will continue to publicly recognize companies at industry meetings and ITP events throughout the upcoming year.
