Industrial Technologies Program Seeks Energy Saving Proposals for Use in the Chemicals and Forest Products Industries - Application Deadline Extended

DOE's Industrial Technologies Program solicits applications for cost-shared research and development of technologies to reduce energy consumption, enhance economic competitiveness, and reduce environmental impacts of the U.S. chemical and forest products industries. Technical topic areas for R&D emphasized in the solicitation include catalytic oxidation, distillation, wood/composites, fiber recycling, and new forest-based materials. Other promising technologies with the potential for exceptional energy savings in the chemical industry may also be considered.

Applicants for this solicitation are invited to develop collaborative project teams that may include industry, university, and national laboratory participants. A minimum of two chemical or forest products businesses must be involved in each project, and these businesses must share at least 30% of the total cost of the project, throughout the duration of the project.

Cooperative project agreements will have duration of three to five years beginning in 2004. Total DOE funds available under this solicitation for the first twelve months of the project will be approximately $4 million for technology development by chemical businesses, and approximately $3 million for technology development by forest products businesses. Additional project cost-share funding by DOE may be available in the subsequent years of the project, subject to availability of funds. All projects are subject to annual review of technical and business progress. DOE anticipates selecting four to seven applications for chemical projects and four to eight applications for the forest products projects for cost-shared technology R&D.
