DOE Releases CHP Guide for Boiler Owners and Operators

Competitive pressures to cut costs by conserving energy are requiring many owners and operators of industrial, commercial, and institutional (ICI) boiler systems to look for ways to use energy more efficiently. Combined heat and power (CHP), or cogeneration, is an alternative to producing steam or hot water on site and purchasing electricity from a local power provider. Recognizing that many issues are involved in making informed decisions about CHP systems, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Industrial Technologies Program announces the Guide to Combined Heat and Power Systems for Boiler Owners and Operators, a resource to help industry evaluate the viability of cogeneration for new or existing ICI boiler installations.

Information in the guide focuses on technical, economic, and regulatory issues that boiler owners and operators should consider during the planning phase of any CHP project. In addition, the guide identifies many of the potential benefits and possible barriers to successful implementation of cogeneration technology. To ensure that the guide covers a broad range of technical and regulatory topics of particular interest to the commercial boiler industry, the guide was developed in cooperation with the American Boiler Manufacturers Association (ABMA) and the Council of Industrial Boiler Owners (CIBO).
