In-Depth Report! Steel Plant-Wide Assessment Finds $2.6 Million in Annual Savings
January 15, 2004
North Star Steel conducted a plant-wide energy efficiency assessment on its plant in Wilton, Iowa. The company focused on electric arc furnace dust reduction, motors, melting and reheat furnace processes, heat recovery, and its energy management plan. Consequently, the assessment team recommended a number of projects that could save the plant $2.6 million annually. Annual natural gas savings were estimated at 139,000 MMBtu, and annual electricity savings at 39 million kWh. Furthermore, the assessment methodology, data, and technical solution options will be shared with six other North Star Steel mills in Texas, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Ohio. Similar assessments and improvements can be implemented at these plants to multiply savings throughout the company.
