Steam Assessment Now Available
October 24, 2002OIT BestPractices Steam has a new resource available: the Steam System Opportunity Assessment for the Pulp and Paper, Chemical Manufacturing, and Petroleum Refining Industries. The assessment develops and presents baseline data for three industriesulp and paper, chemical manufacturing, and petroleum refiningoncerning:
- Steam generation and use
- Potential opportunities available for improving the energy efficiency of steam systems.
The assessment focuses on pulp and paper, chemical manufacturing, and petroleum refining because these industries are significant steam users. The primary audiences for the assessment are steam system end users (CEOs/CFOs, energy managers, plant managers, and operators); steam-system equipment and service providers; and DOE program management. The data generated from this assessment illustrate the magnitude of steam-system improvement opportunities available for the three target industries.
Based on data from the 1994 Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey (MECS), the fuel used to generate steam for the three target industries are:
- Pulp and paper manufacturing: 2,221 TBtu (trillion British thermal units)
- Chemical manufacturing: 1,540 TBtu
- Petroleum refining: 1,675 TBtu
The estimated amount of steam generated, as a percentage of total energy used by each industry, is:
- Pulp and paper manufacturing: 84 percent
- Chemical manufacturing: 47 percent
- Petroleum refining: 51 percent
To estimate the potential savings available from implementing steam-system improvements in these industries, thirty steam-system performance improvement opportunities were identified. A group of experts assessed these improvement opportunities for:
- Potential fuel savings
- The percentage of industry facilities where each opportunity is feasible
- Paybacks for implementing the opportunities.
Based on feedback from the experts, the total combined potential fuel savings from the thirty steam-system improvement opportunities is more than 12 percent for each of the target industries. The available fuel savings that could result from implementing these steam opportunities for the target industries is 674 TBtu.
Resource Dynamics Corp., under contract with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and with funding from DOE-OIT, completed this assessment.
