High-Performance Sustainable Buildings Best Practices
There exist numerous case studies and best practices from across the federal government, including the Department of Energy (DOE), many of which have been captured in the following resources:
- FEMP's High-Performance Federal Buildings Database
- Laboratories for the 21st Century case studies
- GSA's Sustainable Design Program (case studies on LEED® projects, green roofs, underfloor air, and the Sustainability Matters publication)
- USGBC Public Policies
Many other DOE best practices and guides exemplify high-performance and sustainability, including:
- Sandia National Laboratory Recognizes Five Green-Certified Buildings
- Two Brookhaven Lab Buildings Achieve LEED Green Building Certification
- Sustainable NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory)
- Los Alamos National Laboratory Sustainable Design Guide
- Pollution Prevention Award Nominations (Choose "sustainable design/green building" in the "category name" field. Note that each year must be searched separately.)
- Pollution Prevention Best Practices Database (Choose a search term such as "green buildings" or "sustainable building" to pull up relevant results.)
The High-Performance Sustainable Buildings (HPSB) Working Group is soliciting case studies, contract language examples and other best practices. Contact Matthew Gray if you have examples to share in the following categories:
- Employed integrated design principles
- Optimized energy performance optimization
- Water conservation and protection
- Enhanced indoor environmental quality
- Reduced environmental impact of materials
Additional sustainable design and operations resources are available in the Sustainable Design and Operations section of the FEMP Web site.
