Renewable Energy

The Renewable Energy Working Group is addressing the TEAM Initiative goal to develop model processes for purchasing renewable power, maximize the use of Department of Energy (DOE) land to develop utility-scale on-site renewable energy generation, and meet and exceed the EPAct and Executive Order 13423's renewable energy consumption goal of 7.5%. To ensure DOE meets the goal, the working group works closely with DOE sites to identify and develop on-site renewable energy sources. In fact, the working group has screened approximately 60 DOE sites for on-site renewable energy generation and is in the process of assessing and implementing their findings.

Goals

Executive Order 13423 and EPAct 2005 requires DOE to: (1) acquire no less than 7.5% of annual energy consumed from renewable energy sources by fiscal year 2013 and each fiscal year thereafter; (2) promote the use and diversity of renewable energy. To ensure the compliance of DOE with the executive order, DOE Order 430.2B states each site should acquire 7.5% of its annual energy from on-site renewable sources by fiscal year 2010, where technically and economically feasible. Renewable energy refers to energy generated from solar, wind, biomass, landfill gas, ocean, geothermal, municipal solid waste, or new hydroelectric generation.

Efforts Underway

The Renewable Energy Working Group is facilitating the development of projects that will generate an additional estimated 173,258 KWh of electricity per year and approximately 150 MMBtu of thermal output per year with others in the Energy Savings Performance Contracts (ESPC) process or potential Utility Energy Service Contracts (UESC) process that could be implemented. In total, these projects are expected to generate up to 4.37 megawatts (MW) of clean, renewable power to DOE facilities.
