Hydropower Energy Resources

High-resolution tribal hydropower maps can be found at the Virtual Hydropower Prospector, developed by the Idaho National Laboratory for the Department of Energy's Hydropower Program.

After entering the site, use the Region Selector to choose your region. (Browser "pop-ups" must be enabled for the Region Selector to work.) Once you are viewing the map for your region, select Land Use under the Legend, click on the square Feature Select box next to BIA, and then click Refresh Map to highlight reservation lands. You can then zoom in on your reservation to the level of detail you desire.

These maps can display a variety of features simultaneously. For example, to display areas with microhydro potential on BIA lands, select Water Energy Resource Sites under the Legend, click on the Feature Select box next to Microhydro, then click Refresh Map to add microhydro sites to the map.

Detailed instructions can be found on the Virtual Hydropower Prospector main page.
