U.S. Department of Energy - Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
Vehicle Technologies Office
EV Everywhere Grand Challenge
EV Everywhere is the latest in a series of Clean Energy Grand Challenges, which set ambitious, far-reaching goals for the country. Announced by President Obama in March 2012, the initiative focuses on enabling U.S. companies to be the first in the world to produce plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) that are as affordable and convenient for the average American family as today's gasoline-powered vehicles within the next ten years. The initiative will work with stakeholders to rapidly develop and commercialize the next generation of vehicle, component, and charging infrastructure technologies that can achieve sufficient PEV cost, range, and charging infrastructure to assure widespread deployment without subsidies. To leverage each program's unique strengths for this Challenge, the Vehicle Technologies Office is collaborating with the DOE's Office of Science and ARPA-e.
Over the course of the summer, the initiative held a series of workshops to create the initial framing document and gather input from stakeholders. The workshops began in June in Detroit, MI with a kick-off meeting to define the goals and targets of the initiative. The workshop brought together stakeholders from industry, academia, state and local government, and other energy organizations. The attendees discussed how the initiative could influence their specific technology areas, including batteries, electric motors, and lightweighting. The participants also discussed barriers to EV development, such as manufacturing costs, development of charging infrastructure, and consumer acceptance issues. Since then, the Department has organized three additional workshops on Batteries, Power Electronics, and Consumer Acceptance/Charging Infrastructure.
The workshops resulted in the EV Everywhere framing document, which explores these issues.
