Diesel Engine Idling Test

In support of the Department of Energy's FreedomCAR and Vehicle Technologies Program goal to minimize diesel engine idling and reduce the consumption of millions of gallons of diesel fuel consumed during heavy vehicle idling periods, the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) conducted tests to characterize diesel engine wear rates during extended periods of engine idling. Two INL fleet buses (Detroit Diesel Series 50 engines) were idled for 1,000 hours each. Engine wear metals were characterized from weekly oil analysis samples and destructive filter analyses.
