Alternative Fuels Authorization

The Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct 1992) authorizes the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to add fuels to the list of EPAct 1992-specified alternative fuels by final rulemaking following a petition process. Through this process, petitioners must make specific demonstrations concerning fuel composition and environmental and energy security benefits before DOE will undertake a rulemaking.

The alternative fuel petition process is an extensive and resource-intensive regulatory process that involves full public disclosure. All documents and media submitted as part of this process are published in an online docket.

To learn about the petition process, visit the Alternative Fuel Petitions section.
