These are excerpts from federal statutes that established key Energy Policy Act (EPAct) transportation regulatory activities.

• Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990
  Encouraged the production and use of alternative fuel vehicles and the reduction of vehicle emissions through amendments to the Clean Air Act

• Energy Policy Act of 1992
  Defined alternative fuels and directed the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to develop a regulatory program for certain fleets in Metropolitan Statistical Areas to serve as launching pads for alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technologies

• Energy Conservation Reauthorization Act of 1998
  Amended EPAct 1992 to award covered fleets credits toward compliance based on biodiesel blend use

• Energy Policy Act of 2005
  Amended EPAct 1992 to establish
