Primary Energy Sources by Sector, 2002
Nearly 97% of primary energy used in the transportation sector is petroleum. The residential and commercial sectors rely mostly on electricity (67% and 76%, respectively) for the primary energy they consume. More than half of primary energy used by the electric power sector comes from coal. The most diversified sector in terms of energy source is the industrial sector, which uses about one-third electricity, and just under one-third of petroleum and natural gas, along with smaller amounts of coal and renewables.
