New Light Vehicle Market Shares, 1976 – 2002
The graph below shows the market shares of light vehicles by size class. Cars are shown in shades of green and light trucks are shown in shades of blue. The light trucks have been gaining market share since the early 1980s, mainly because of the increases in sport utility vehicles (SUVs), large pickups, and minivans.
Note: Sales based on the period between Oct. 1 of the previous year and Sept. 30 of the current year.
