New Light Vehicle Sales Shares, 1976-2001
Light trucks, which include pickups, vans, and sport utility vehicles (SUVs), increased their share of the new light vehicle market from 20% in 1976 to 50% in 2001. The graph shows the market shares of each size class with the light trucks labeled in blue and the cars labeled in green. The graph shows the emergence of the minivan in the early 1980s and the rising popularity of SUVs in the 1990s.
