Fact #183: September 18, 2001 Means of Transportation to Work: 1980, 1990, and 2000
By far most Americans use private vehicles to commute to work. The percentage of workers using public transportation declined by 1.1 percentage point in the 10-year period between 1980 and 1990, but stayed relatively the same (0.1 percentage point decline) from 1990 to 2000.
