Ohio Requires 25% Renewable or Advanced Energy by 2025

A new Ohio law requires the state's utilities to draw on renewable or "advanced" energy for 25% of their electricity supply by 2025, with renewable energy meeting at least half of that requirement. The new law also requires utilities to establish energy efficiency and demand reduction programs. More

Record Oil Prices Spur More Increases in Projected Energy Costs

Crude oil prices reached $120 per barrel in April, and DOE's Energy Information Administration (EIA) now believes that oil prices will average $110 per barrel for the year as a whole. The EIA expects gasoline prices to reach a peak of $3.73 per gallon in June, while diesel fuel prices will be even higher. More

Proposed New Standards to Increase Fuel Economy by 25% by 2015

DOE Responds to TIME Magazine's Criticism of Ethanol

In the April 28 issue of TIME magazine, Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman and Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer rebutted the magazine's recent article about the use and development of ethanol. In their response, the Secretaries noted that second and third generation biofuels have the potential to reduce greenhouse gases, and that modern agriculture has the capacity to manage land use responsibly—balancing our nation's needs for both fuel and food. More

DOE to Offer $10 Billion in Renewable, Efficiency Loan Guarantees

DOE will issue a solicitation in June offering up to $10 billion in loan guarantees for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and electric transmission projects. But DOE wants input before then about which technologies to support. Responses to DOE's Request for Information are due by May 2. More

EPA: U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions Dropped 1.1% in 2006

The official accounting of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2006 finds a 1.1% drop, slightly less of a drop than calculated by DOE's Energy Information Administration late last year. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that U.S. greenhouse gas emissions have increased 14.7% since 1990. More

President Bush Sets Goals for Greenhouse Gas Emissions

If President Bush has his way, the United States will stop the growth in its greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. To meet that goal, electric utilities will have to slow the growth in greenhouse gas emissions so that they peak within 10 to 15 years; energy efficiency and renewable energy will help. More
