Integration and Validation
Once vehicle components and subsystems prove out in the initial modeling and simulation research phases, it is time to build, integrate, and validate prototypes of those components and subsystems. After component and subsystem prototypes have been developed by means of technology research and development activities, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) uses a sophisticated approach known as hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) to integrate and test these prototypes in an emulated vehicle environment equipped with realistic control system interfaces and interactions.
Once components and subsystems have been integrated and tested in an emulation environment, researchers validate the technology performance in a vehicle-systems context to ensure that they meet their technical targets and can be used in actual vehicle applications. Validation is accomplished utilizing the Advanced Research Platform and the PSAT-PRO software.
PSAT-PRO, developed by Argonne National Laboratory, is an accurate extension of PSAT for Hardware-in-the-Loop and Rapid Control Prototyping. By using PSAT-PRO, researchers can not only evaluate component performance within a vehicle system context, but can also optimize propulsion system control and refine performance and control requirements based on the components capabilities.
