Federal Energy and Water Awards Honor Federal Agencies' Energy-Saving Efforts

November 1, 2007

On November 1st, DOE Secretary Samuel Bodman awarded the 2007 Federal Energy and Water Management Award to 25 individuals, teams, and organizations within the federal government, whose efforts resulted in more than $18 million in energy cost savings over the last year. The agencies that received the awards included the United States Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Navy; the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Energy, Health and Human Services, Interior, and Veterans Affairs; Environmental Protection Agency; General Services Administration; and the U.S. Postal Service. Additionally, the Energy Saver Showcase Award was awarded to federal facilities at the U.S. Departments of Commerce and Interior, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the General Services Administration for their superior sustainable building construction.

The Federal Energy and Water Management Awards have been held annually since 1981, and work to recognize federal agencies and their attempts to be both energy efficient and to meet executive and congressional standards. The 2007 award winners were selected from nominations from 17 federal agencies. The awards recognize accomplishments such as making use of renewable energy systems, upgrading building management and HVAC equipment, and improving internal energy security. See the DOE press release and the complete list of this year's Federal Energy and Water Management Award winners.

Overall, the federal government has decreased its overall energy consumption by 6.4% per square foot in fiscal year 2006, as compared to fiscal year 2003 consumption rates. The federal government has also reported purchased 12.9 trillion Btu of renewable energy, which is equivalent to 6.9% of their total electrical use.
