New York Commission Approves 229-Megawatt Wind Farm

The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) has authorized the construction and operation of a wind energy project capable of generating 229 megawatts (MW) of electricity in the Towns of Clinton and Ellenburg, in the far northeast corner of the state. The Marble River Wind Farm will be New York's second largest wind facility and will connect to an existing New York Power Authority transmission line.

Marble River LLC (Marble River) is based in Ellenburg and is a joint venture of Horizon Wind Energy LLC and AESAcciona Energy NY, LLC. The company plans to build 109 wind turbines, each rated at 2.1 MW, at the site. The turbines will vary in height, with the tallest reaching 407 feet. In addition, the project will include access roads, aboveground and underground electrical collection lines, an interconnection substation, a construction staging area, and a centrally located operations and maintenance facility.

Marble River intends to sell the power generated by the wind farm into wholesale markets through bilateral contracts and into spot markets administered by the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) or adjacent control areas. The company plans to sell renewable energy credits to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, green tag marketers, and other buyers. The company also plans to offer capacity, voltage support, and ancillary services to the NYISO markets.

The Marble River facility is located near two other wind farms, Noble Clinton and Noble Ellenburg, and is about 120 miles northeast of the largest wind farm in the state, the 320-MW Maple Ridge wind project.

Marble River estimates the annual economic benefits of its wind farm will be more than $5 million.
