Pennsylvania's Largest Wind Project is Operating

January 14, 2013

Pennsylvania's largest wind project, located on a 9,000-acre site 20 miles northwest of Scranton, is operational, joint venture operators BP Wind Energy and Sempra US Gas & Power announced on January 8. The $250 million commercial Mehoopany Wind Farm has 88 turbines that will produce 141 megawatts of electricity.

The facility is expected to create some 10-15 permanent jobs, and more than 400 jobs were created during the peak of construction. The entire power output has been sold under long-term power purchase agreements with Old Dominion Electric Cooperative and Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative Inc. The agreements were made possible through the efforts of the National Renewables Cooperative Organization, which enables cooperatives nationwide to pool the ownership and benefits of renewable resources.
