Six Companies Win the 2007 Green Power Supplier Awards

DOE recognized six companies on October 22nd for their work for advancing and developing the use of green power—electricity from renewable energy sources. The winners of the 2007 Green Power Supplier Awards are: Constellation NewEnergy; 3Degrees; Sterling Planet; SunEdison; Pacific Power and Rocky Mountain Power; and Silicon Valley Power. The DOE Green Power Supplier Awards, co-sponsored by the DOE and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, are designed to recognize organizations that advance the nation's green power markets through their green power programs. The combined green power provided by all six winners equals more than 5 billion kilowatt-hours per year, which is enough to power nearly 465,000 average U.S. households. The winners were announced at the Seventh Annual Green Power Leadership Awards in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The awards fall under three sub-categories. Constellation NewEnergy, a national energy marketer, won in the New Green Power Program or Product category for providing green power to the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission in the District of Columbia. In the Renewable Energy Marketer category, the winners were all national marketers: 3Degrees and Sterling Planet, both of which sell renewable energy certificates, and SunEdison, a solar energy company. Silicon Valley Power, the municipal utility for Santa Clara, California, won under the Green Power Program of the Year category, as did two PacifiCorp subsidiaries—Pacific Power and Rocky Mountain Power. Those two utilities won for their Blue Sky program, which is offered in California, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Throughout the country, more than half of all U.S. electricity customers have an option to purchase some type of green power product from a retail electricity provider. Roughly one-quarter of the nation's utilities now offer green power programs to customers, and voluntary retail sales of renewable energy in the United States totaled more than 12 billion kilowatt-hours in 2006, a 40% increase over the previous year.
