Rulemaking for Miscellaneous Refrigeration Products Test Procedure
The Department of Energy (DOE) is initiating a rulemaking to develop potential test procedures for miscellaneous residential refrigeration products, which include wine chillers and other products that are not currently covered as residential refrigerators, refrigerator-freezers, or freezers. DOE has also initiated a rulemaking to consider establishing energy conservation standards for these products.

DOE published a notice of proposed rulemaking regarding test procedures for miscellaneous refrigeration products. 79 FR 74893 (December 16, 2014) A public meeting is scheduled for January 8, 2015. The comment deadline is March 2, 2015.

DOE has initiated a rulemaking to consider establishing energy conservation standards for miscellaneous refrigeration products.
Under 42 U.S.C. 6293, The Energy Policy and Conservation Act (42 U.S.C. 6291, et seq.; EPCA) sets forth the criteria and procedures DOE must follow when prescribing or amending test procedures for covered products. Any test procedures prescribed or amended under this section shall be reasonably designed to produce test results that measure the energy efficiency, energy use or estimated annual operating cost of a covered product during a representative average use cycle or period of use and shall not be unduly burdensome to conduct. (42 U.S.C. 6293(b)(3))
