California and Utilities Work to Save Energy in State Buildings
September 13, 2006
The California Department of General Services (DGS) announced in late August that it will collaborate with the state's largest utilities on a $17 million project to improve energy efficiency in state facilities. DGS will work with Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, San Diego Gas & Electric, and the Southern California Gas Company to implement improvements to dozens of the state's largest office buildings, several prisons, and a number of smaller buildings such as Department of Motor Vehicles field offices. The project will help the state meet Governor Schwarzenegger's Green Building Initiative (Executive Order S-20-04), which calls for public buildings to reduce energy consumption 20 percent by 2015 and encourages the private sector to do the same.
