DOE Releases Updated Steam System Informational Resources

The U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) recently updated its popular collection of informational resources focused on steam system energy efficiency. The primary reference book, Improving Steam System Performance: A Sourcebook for Industry, 2nd Edition, is a comprehensive resource that educates readers about the basic components of steam systems, outlines opportunities for energy and performance improvements, highlights the benefits of utilizing a systems approach to managing steam, and directs readers to helpful resources. In the new edition, readers will find discussions about the following topics:
- Energy management standards for continuous improvement
- Standards-based assessment protocols
- A database of energy efficiency incentives
- Reference materials and assessment tools.
In addition to the updated sourcebook, AMO has also released 27 companion tip sheets that offer low-cost, practical, "how-to" guidance on a variety of steam system management topics and techniques, including the following:
- Boiler upgrades and improvements
- Steam trap management
- Waste energy recovery.
Collectively, these resources can help steam system users identify opportunities to optimize performance, reduce energy use, and save money within their operations. The updated sourcebook, as well as the 27 tip sheets, are now available for download—free of charge—on the AMO website.
