Step 3.2 Execute the action plan(s)

This step is relevant to sections 4.2.2 f), 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 b) of the ISO 50001-2011 standard.

Along with implementing management of the significant energy uses and legal and other energy requirements (see Step 3), the "DO" processes of the energy management system (EnMS) focus on achieving energy performance improvement through successful implementation of your energy project(s). Executing energy projects involves communicating and taking action based on the responsibilities, tasks and other expectations outlined in the documented action plan(s).

The tasks in this step are consistent with how ISO 14001-2004 environmental management programs are implemented.

How to do it

The following tasks will help you execute the action plan(s):

3.2.1 Communicate expectations

The first step to communicating expectations for the energy project(s) is to have them fully defined within the documented action plan(s). (See also the Example Energy Management Action Plan.)This should have been accomplished in Step 2.11.

Everyone involved in energy project(s) needs to know their role and responsibilities. Since action plans often can involve personnel who are not on the energy team, communicating to them the responsibilities and expectations for their involvement is critical. This should be done using existing methods of internal communication. A “project kick-off” meeting that brings together all the personnel involved can be an effective approach for communicating the expectations for the project. It can help them understand how their assigned tasks or actions fit into the overall effort.

3.2.2 Take appropriate action

Taking appropriate action to implement the action plan(s) involves relevant personnel executing their assigned tasks in an efficient and timely manner. Any actual or potential impacts of one task on other tasks should be understood by the personnel involved so that unintended "cascade effects" can be avoided.

Good project management can ensure that the action plans are properly implemented. Ongoing communication such as status reporting and project team meetings when appropriate will contribute to the success of the effort. For further information on project management, see Project Management for EnMS Implementation, which provides guidance that can be applied to both the entire EnMS implementation initiative and energy projects with associated action plans.
