Step 5.1 Conduct management review of performance

Transition to SEP

Your organization’s commitment to SEP must be maintained within the operation of your energy management system (EnMS). ISO 50001 requires a management review to ensure the continuing suitability and effectiveness of the EnMS. ANSI/MSE 50021 describes additional management review requirements to ensure continuing suitability and effectiveness of the SEP program as discussed on the How to do it page.

How to do it

The following actions will help you meet SEP requirements for conducting a management review:

5.1.6 Ensure EnMS in place at within five months after the end of the achievement period

SEP requires that the EnMS be in place within five months after the end of the achievement period. This task relates to task 5.1.4 in Level 2 ISO 50001 Energy Management.

5.1.7 Ensure SEnPI model data is less than eleven months old at the completion of the certification or recertification audit

To satisfy SEP requirements ensure the energy data used in the SEnPI model is less than eleven months old at the completion of the certification or recertification audit. This task builds upon task 5.1.4 in Level 2 ISO 50001 Energy Management.

5.1.8 Management review includes review of the SEP achievement level and performance pathway

Ensure that you include a review of the SEP achievement level and performance pathway during the management review. This task relates to and builds upon task 5.1.4 in Level 2 ISO 50001 Energy Management.

5.1.9 Management review includes review of energy performance as determined by the SEnPI

In the management review ensure that you include a review of the organization’s energy performance as determined by the SEnPI. This task relates to and builds upon task 5.1.4 in Level 2 ISO 50001 Energy Management.

5.1.10 Management review includes any changes to the SEP achievement level or performance pathway

To satisfy SEP requirements your organization must review the SEP achievement level and performance pathway. You need to include any changes in decisions related to SEP achievement level and performance pathway in the management review outputs. This task relates to and builds upon task 5.1.4 in Level 2 ISO 50001 Energy Management.

ANSI/MSE 50021 provides the SEP requirements related to management review :

ANSI/MSE 50021

  • Section 4.1 requires the energy management system (EnMS) be in place within five months after the end of the achievement period. Evidence that your EnMS is in place can include management review records that demonstrate that the complete EnMS has been subjected to a management review at least five months prior to the end of the achievement period.

  • Section 4.6.1 requires that the data used in the SEnPI model be no more than eleven months old at the completion of the certification or recertification audit. In the management review, your top management should evaluate the data and timeframes related to your EnMS implementation and the SEnPI calculation for conformance with these requirements.

  • Section 4.7 identifies three additional items that must be included in the management review of your EnMS at least once prior to the certification or recertification audit. These items include review of the SEP achievement level pursued by your organization, review of the SEP performance pathway, and review of your organization’s energy performance as determined by the SEnPI. Any changes in the decisions related to the SEP achievement level or performance pathway for your organization need to be included in the management review outputs.

Some of the SEP information and decisions from the management review will be used on the SEP application for certification and recertification. The management review records should show these inputs or decision outputs. The SEP achievement level and energy performance claim as determined by the SEnPI and documented in the management review records should be consistent with the information entered on the SEP application for certification or recertification.
